Read-a-thon and Book Fair
Students will bring home Read-a-thon forms on Friday, October 2 (also attached), so students can begin to collect pledges. Our annual Read-a-thon is taking place over the fall break this year. Participants can win prizes and participate in a celebration on the first Friday we return from break. Also, elementary aged Read-a-thon participants can earn Book Fair dollars to spend at the annual Book Fair which will be held at the end of October, during Student Led Conferences. Here are the dates/deadlines for the Read-a-thon:
Proceeds will benefit the Fearey Scholarship Fund to help high school students pay for their CWI classes.
Student Led Conferences
The format for Student Led Conferences includes parents and students (1st—12th grade) coming to the conference together. Each student will present their progress report, work samples and reflection sheets to their parents. Parents are encouraged to ask questions of their child to gather additional information regarding their child’s progress. The teacher will be available for questions, however, the teacher will not meet individually with parents. If a parent feels there is a need to speak in more detail with the classroom teacher, a separate meeting can be requested of the teacher during Student Led Conferences and scheduled at a later date.
Student Led Conferences are an excellent way of teaching students to take responsibility for their learning as well as providing them with presentation and interviewing skills that will help them in adult life and the workforce.
It would be helpful for parents to make child care arrangements for younger children allowing the student presenting their portfolio to have the parent’s full attention during the Student Led Conference. If other school aged children are attending conferences because they are also presenting their portfolio to parents, these children should wait in one of the chairs provided in the hallway and remain quiet by reading a book or engaging in another quiet activity during their sibling’s presentation.
