Concert Band (9-12)

 2 semesters 
Prerequisite: one year of band experience 
Course Description: 
The central goal of Concert Band is to help the student further develop their playing skills. Students will continue building their knowledge of music vocabulary and their ability to read music notation. Many styles of music will be prepared and performed. Some studied selections will be chosen for other public performances such as pep band, special school assemblies, etc., and will be announced throughout the year. Students will participate in two concerts in December and May. Students will be required to attend and critique one concert per quarter. Any performance will be graded, as concert band is considered a “performance” class.

Drama (9-12)

Prerequisite: none 
Course Description: 
The high school drama elective will allow students to prepare a play for an end-of-semester performance for a public audience (one in the fall and one in the spring). During class, students will delegate all necessary tasks for the culminating project, including selecting a play, casting parts, blocking stage direction, designing and building the set, selecting costumes, memorizing lines, and preparing public relations materials to advertise for the play, including maintaining the Drama website and creating performance night flyers. During the course of the semester, students may also engage in practical drama exercises and improvisation. Students will be evaluated based on in-class participation and their culminating project (the final play); the course will be offered on a pass/fail basis. Please bring your open-mindedness, enthusiasm, and creativity to class! 

Lifetime Sports (9-12)

Prerequisite: None 
Course Description: 
This is a course that will help individuals gain a better understanding of the need for a planned activity program. Various activities, such as golf, bowling, and circuit training are planned to recognize each student's different interests. One major objective of lifetime sports is to have each student realize the importance of incorporating physical activity into his or her future lifestyle. 

Apprenticeship (11-12)

Course Description
Compass Honors H.S. requires all students to complete 120 Apprenticeship hours (60 during junior year/60 during senior year) in order to graduate. This means that students are given the opportunity to earn academic credit

Career Studies (10)

1 Semester

Course Description: 
The examination of the variety of career choices, how to make the best choice for the individual, and gaining the knowledge to be successful in the college and work environment. 

Community Service (9-12)

2 Semesters 
Prerequisite: none
Course Description: 
Youth service is intended to strengthen young peoples' senses of civic engagement and community, and to help them achieve their educational, developmental and social goals. Compass Honors High School requires all students to complete 200 Service hours.

Teacher Aide (10-12)

1 Semester 
Prerequisite: none 
Course Description: 
Teacher aides work with students in the classroom and assist teachers. Teacher aides’ record grades, set up equipment, distribute school supplies, operate duplicating machines to copy classroom materials, assist students individually or in small groups, distribute books, and arrange displays. Teacher aides may also type and file teaching materials.
