Sports Booster News

Mark your calendar now for the fall Compass athletics booster meeting on Friday, September 30 at 6:00 in the cafeteria. We will have a potato bar dinner followed by a presentation and the kickoff of our fall fundraising event. Boosters will provide potatoes and drinks. Each attending family is asked to bring a favorite potato topping—chili, cheese, sour cream, or your favorite creative way to make this a whopper! Contact Curt Goldgrabe at 921-8332 with any questions or Mr. Pinkerman at the school.

Compass Aviator sports passes are available for purchase at the school office and at all home games. All home games this year are played at the Homecourt YMCA, 936 W. Taylor Avenue in Meridian, just off Franklin Road west of Meridian Road. Your booster club membership includes an all-sport pass for all home high school volleyball and basketball games and costs only $35. This pass gives you and your immediate family free admission to all home games (excluding post-season games). It’s a great deal, and a great way to support Aviator athletes. See the Compass high school website for volleyball and basketball schedules.

We are gearing up to begin on our 2011/12 yearbook and are in need of several parent classroom photographers. These classroom photographers will take random shots of the students, teacher, and classroom activities. Unfortunately, I am unable to capture the true essence of the classroom culture since I too am teaching. The following areas still need photographers for their class: 2nd Grade B class, Ms. Gibbs' class, 4th grade, Mrs. Simili's class, Mrs. Andersen's class, 7th Grade A&B, 8th Grade A&B, All of High School, sports and any other event. If you can help in any way please don't hesitate to contact me.

Please contact Mr. Cordero at gcordero@compasscharter.orgfor more information.

Bus Routes
Our elementary buses are full, in fact, one is overloaded. Therefore, Brown Bus intends to make a few route adjustments in order to balance the bus loads among our three buses. Please watch for further information regarding route and/or bus assignment changes.

Additionally, since the elementary buses are full, we can’t allow secondary students to wait for younger siblings in order to ride an elementary bus. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Bus Behavior
The school bus is an extension of the school and therefore the behavior expectations that we have at school also apply to the bus.

Please talk to your students about “self-discipline” and appropriate behavior. If you learn of inappropriate behavior, please report this to me at I can’t address behaviors that I don’t know about.

Transportation Changes
If you have a “one day” transportation change for your child such as: they are going home with a friend or a grandparent is picking them up rather then having them ride the bus, etc. Please, Please, Please provide a note and/or email your child’s teacher AND the school office.

Written notes are required for students to ride the bus with a friend.

Don’t call the school office with less than 30 minutes remaining in the school day to request a change in transportation as this doesn’t allow enough time to locate your child’s class to communicate the chang

Traffic Flow
For safety reasons, please turn off your cell phone during student pick-up & drop-off
For student Drop-off and Pick-up, parents will enter the back parking lot and drive behind the gymnasium building toward the playground.

Students can load the vehicle when it is parallel to the playground/cafeteria. Please don’t make arrangements with your child to meet you in another location for pickup as this prevents adult supervision and creates a safety issue.

WATCH OUT for students walking and riding bikes!

Also, please be kind and courteous to other drivers by not leaving your vehicle while in the drop-off/pick-up line.

Don’t make arrangements with your child(ren) to meet you elsewhere to be picked up as this creates a supervision/safety issue.

Arrival and Departure Schedule
To ensure your child’s safety Compass provides supervision for students 20 minutes prior to the start of the day (6th-12th 7:20am-7:40am/K-5th 9:10am-9:30am) and 15 minutes following the end of the day (6th-12th 2:35pm-2:50pm/K-5th 3:35pm-3:50pm). Personnel and funding aren’t available to provide supervision outside of these hours. It is the desire of the administration at Compass Public Charter School to keep your children safe, therefore please follow the policy as outlined in the Student Handbook and make arrangements for your children to arrive and depart school according to school policy.

Students will not be allowed to “hang-out” before or after school. Secondary students (6th-12th) can’t wait to ride the elementary buses with their younger siblings as the elementary buses are full. An alternative plan is to have your secondary student meet their younger sibling at the bus stop to provide safety and supervision for the younger sibling from the bus stop to home.

Jump Rope Team
The Jump Rope Team will practice on Wednesdays starting September 7th in the cafeteria from 3:45-4:30. If you missed the informational meeting not to worry you can still show up to the first practice. Email Mrs. Hill at with any questions.

Due to increased enrollment, the Compass Aviator Athletics’ Program has found itself in a situation where we need to revisit our procedures for creating teams. While our enrollment is increasing significantly, our fellow 1A Conference schools are decreasing in some of their sports’ programs which have negatively impacted the number of students who are able to participate. The effect on our athletics’ program is that our teams are much larger than most, leaving fewer teams with C teams to compete against. Therefore, we will begin implementing procedures for cutting players from team tryouts. This eliminates having a C team in general for middle school sports under the current enrollment conditions.
John Fearey Scholarship
Our 11th and 12th grade students have the opportunity to take College of Western Idaho classes for concurrent or dual credits (credits count for both high school graduation and college graduation).

Some of our students struggle financially so we created a way to give financial assistance. It is called the John Fearey Fund. Students may apply for partial or full funding of their books and/or tuition. If you would like to contribute to this fund (non profit) we would gladly accept any amount you feel comfortable sending to us. Please make checks out to Compass Public Charter School-Fearey Fund.

We thank you for any help you are able to give to our students who are pursuing a college education.

Compass Spirit Wear

Compass Spirit Wear It's time to order Compass spirit wear! There are t-shirts (short and long-sleeved) and sweatshirts (crew neck and hoodies) available in youth and adult sizes. All spirit wear is navy blue in color and has a white logo. An example of the spirit wear and the order form is attached to this newsletter so you may view it or print it out at your convenience. These forms are also available on the Compass website. Order forms are also available in the school office. The due date to order is Friday, September 9th and the shirts will arrive approximately 2-3 weeks after the orders are submitted. Please make checks payable to Compass PFA and return your order to your child's teacher or it may be dropped off at the school office. For questions please contact the Compass PFA.

Student Lunch Accounts
Please come up with a system to keep you child’s lunch account balance in the positive. The best way to do this is to sit down with your child to review the lunch menu and determine what meals they want to eat for the week or month then send in that amount for the week/month.

Lunch money can be sent in with the student in an envelope with the student’s first and last name and given to the teacher. Parents also have the option of putting money on the child’s online account through Nutri Kids (you will need to know your student’s ID # found on their student ID card).

With either payment option there will be a delay in getting payments credited to student accounts. A good idea would to be deposit a day earlier then normal to prevent student accounts from hitting a zero balance.

Lunch Room Volunteers
Mrs. Long would greatly appreciate more volunteers for the school lunchroom. Volunteers are needed every day except Tuesday. Lunch runs from 10:45-1:30. Individuals who can commit to a specific day every week are preferable.

School-Parent Communication
· Friday attendance/newsletter from the school office sent via email. The newsletter will be sent to the email you provided to the school at registration.

· Compass website updated consistently with homework requirements and teacher, board, administration contact information.

· PowerSchool for students in 5TH-12TH grade. You will receive a password to log on to your child’s account for access to daily grades and assignment completion.

· Agenda Books for students in 4th-12th grade. Students are asked to record homework assignments and due dates every day. Some grades require a daily parent signature in the agenda book.

· Homework Folders for students in K-8th grade. Students have a homework folder that contains both work to be completed as well as corrected completed work with teacher comments.

· Email/Phone Calls. Teachers will contact parents directly when necessary.

Remember—Communication works both ways. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the teacher before you become frustrated. The best way to initiate communication with your child’s teacher is via email. Please allow at least 24 hours for the teacher to respond to your email as most teachers don’t have an opportunity to read their email until the end of the school day.

Attendance Policy
Absences due to illness, accident, and death in the family are the only absences that Compass Public Charter School will consider excused absences. All other absences will be considered unexcused unless there are extraordinary circumstances. Court appearances, professional appointments or religious observances may be considered extraordinary with administrative approval; family trips or vacations are not considered extraordinary.

If a student accumulates excessive absences (15 in a semester), whether or not the absences are excused or unexcused, the student will be dropped from school.

When a student has an excused absence, such as illness, they are given two (2) days for every day absent to make up missing homework. In the upper grades, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure they receive and complete all of the missing assignments. Additionally, while the student is home ill, they may be able to do some of the regularly assigned homework. Rather than calling the school for “homework packets”, please check the Compass website for assignments. Most students know their math assignments from week to week as the classes work through the math book in lesson order. Students are not allowed to make-up homework for unexcused absences.

Checking Students Out
Please call ahead to the office (30 minutes minimum) to request that your child be released from class for an appointment. The student will be in the office at the time you request them to be. If you don’t arrive within 10 minutes of that time, the student will be sent back to class.
